Uttarkashi in May
Uttarakhand, India
Go in May — peak season with 12–24°C days, open high-altitude trails, and minimal crowds before Char Dham pilgrim rush hits roads.
Peak crowds
May is one of Uttarkashi's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Transit town for Gangotri and Yamunotri. Yatra season creates heavy through-traffic May-Jun and Oct. Nehru Institute of Mountaineering adds seasonal activity.
May launches the Char Dham season. Gangotri temple opens (date varies, around Akshaya Tritiya). Uttarkashi transforms into a pilgrim highway town — buses, shared jeeps, and devotees heading to Gangotri (100km) and Yamunotri (via Barkot). The NIM climbing season begins. Temperatures at 18-30°C. The Bhagirathi valley is green and full. Hotels from ₹800-2,500 fill fast.
The May story
May Uttarkashi is Char Dham Central. The Gangotri temple opening triggers a wave: pilgrims, sadhus, support staff. The town's restaurants, hotels, and transport services switch to peak mode. The NIM mountaineering season is in full swing — summit reports filter back to the campus. The Bhagirathi valley is fully green. For pilgrims, Uttarkashi is the overnight before Gangotri. For non-pilgrims, the town offers the Kashi Vishwanath temple (less chaotic than Gangotri), the NIM museum, and river walks. Hotels at ₹1,000-3,000, booking advised. The evening at the temple ghat — pilgrims bathing in the Bhagirathi, aarti bells, mountain dusk — is Uttarkashi's quintessential scene.
