Peak Season
Sangla Valley in June
Himachal Pradesh, India
June pre-monsoon brings warmth (15-28°C) and the first clouds. The valley is lush green. The Baspa is at strong volume from peak snowmelt. Tourist traffic peaks in the first two weeks before monsoon uncertainty sets in. The drive from Shimla (230km, 8-9 hours) is scenic but exhausting. Apple trees are fruiting. The higher pastures above the valley open for shepherds. By late June, rain starts.
The June story
Early June is Sangla's last comfortable window. The orchards are lush, the river is full, and the weather holds warmth without monsoon. The drive from Shimla via Narkanda and Rampur is one of Himachal's great road trips â from pine to deodar to temperate fruit to stark mountain. Kamru Fort in June light, with green valley spreading below and snow peaks above, is the definitive Kinnauri image. Chitkul is accessible and warming. The higher treks â to Rupin Pass, to Lamkhaga â launch from this valley in June. By mid-month, clouds build and the monsoon threat looms. If you're coming, come in the first two weeks. Late June road conditions deteriorate fast.
