Caution
Ranikhet in January
Uttarakhand, India
January is Ranikhet at its coldest â 0-8°C, frost on the grass, the Himalayan panorama razor-sharp on clear days. The cantonment town runs on military discipline and winter silence. The golf course (one of Asia's highest at 1,829m) is too frozen for play. Pine forests are still, woodsmoke hangs in the air. Snowfall is rare at this altitude but not impossible.
The January story
January Ranikhet is for solitude seekers. The Kumaon Regiment Centre museum tells the story of one of India's most decorated regiments â and you'll have it nearly to yourself. The 4km walk from the mall road to Chaubatia Gardens through frosted pine forest is meditation without trying. The Himalayan panorama from the KMVN rest house viewpoint â Nanda Devi (7,816m), Trishul (7,120m), and Nanda Ghunti in a single sweep â is India's most underrated mountain view. Hotels are at annual lows (âš800-1,500 for good rooms). Almora (50km) and Kausani (55km) are easy day trips. The roads are clear unless rare snowfall hits. Carry proper winter gear â this is not plains-India cold.
