Dormant orchards mean bare slopes—wait for spring bloom if Chaubatia gardens drew you here
February stays cold — 2-12°C — but the days start stretching. The Himalayan view (Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nanda Ghunti) is at its clearest before spring haze builds. The cantonment's colonial bungalows look their most atmospheric with bare trees and wood smoke. Chaubatia Gardens are dormant but the orchard walks are peaceful.
The February story
February rewards the clear-sky gambler. On good days, the 200km Himalayan panorama is so sharp it feels artificial. The Chaubatia Gardens orchid house stays warm enough to visit. The Jhula Devi Temple (bells hung by wish-seekers, thousands of them) is atmospheric in winter quiet. The walk to Majkhali viewpoint (8km from town) through pine and oak forest is cold but spectacular. Army heritage — the Kumaon Regiment has fought in every major Indian conflict — gives the town a backbone that pure tourist hill stations lack. Budget hotels run ₹1,000-1,800. The Almora-Ranikhet road is one of Uttarakhand's most scenic drives.
