Monsoon rains make temple interiors inaccessible and pathways slippery
June in Pattadakal is the first ease month. Southwest monsoon spillover reaches the Malaprabha river basin (50-70mm across 5-7 wet days) — short late-afternoon thunderstorms drop daytime temperatures 4-5C from May. Daytime 35-36C, nights 24-25C, humidity 65 percent. The stone-surface temperatures at the 10-temple complex stop reaching lethal levels but the open-plain inter-temple walks (Virupaksha to Mallikarjuna to Sangameshwara to Papanatha to Galaganatha) still compress to 6-10am and 5-7pm. The Malaprabha river starts to refill from monsoon recharge. The surrounding wheat-and-jowar belt around the temple complex turns green — the visual character of the UNESCO site changes materially from the dry-season ochre of February. Temple-interior coolness at Virupaksha and Mallikarjuna mandapas at peak comfort. The Papanatha Ramayana frieze panels best viewed 7-9am. Hotel base at Badami remains off-peak: Krishna Heritage ₹2,500-3,500, Mookambika ₹1,500-2,500, KSTDC ₹1,200-2,000. The post-monsoon green that defines September-October Pattadakal has begun. Functional only for travelers with no flexibility. October is materially better.
