Pattadakal
Karnataka ยท Hampi & Northern Heritage ยท 530m
UNESCO temple complex โ where Chalukya architects experimented before building their capitals
Why Special
Pattadakal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 10 major temples from the 7th-8th century โ the Chalukya dynasty's ceremonial coronation site. The Virupaksha Temple (745 CE) is the masterpiece โ a perfect synthesis of North Indian (Nagara) and South Indian (Dravida) architectural styles. The Papanatha Temple has detailed Ramayana narrative panels. The site is remarkably peaceful โ far less visited than Hampi despite equal historical importance.
