Orchha in May
Madhya Pradesh, India
Skip — 40–45°C in Bundelkhand; Bundela palaces (Jahangir Mahal) radiate stone heat, Betwa river bath unsafe, no shaded promenade. Better window: October–March.
May bakes Orchha at 35-46°C. The hottest month. The loo wind blows through the empty palaces. Tourist numbers are near-zero. The Betwa is at minimum flow. The monuments shimmer in heat haze. Yet the vultures soar, the temple guards salute Rama at dusk, and the cenotaphs stand as they have for 400 years—indifferent to temperature.
The May story
May Orchha is extreme heat travel. Only visit if you're heat-adapted and schedule around it: explore 6-9 AM, retreat to AC accommodation 9 AM-5 PM, re-emerge for sunset. The evening aarti at Ram Raja Temple, after the day's inferno, has a desperate beauty. The sound of temple bells carrying across the still, hot air of the Betwa riverfront at dusk is Orchha's emotional peak. Hotel rates are at annual lows—properties that charge ₹3000 in winter drop to ₹1000. The local lassi at the single chai stall near the palace gates is essential survival equipment. The town has zero foreign tourists in May; the few Indian visitors are usually pilgrims at the Ram Raja Temple.
