Built 1631 by Queen Ganesh Kunwari, wife of King Madhukar Shah (r. 1554-1592). She walked 8 months and 27 days from Ayodhya to Orchha carrying the Ram idol after a vision; the deity's condition was "wherever I am first seated will be my permanent abode" — and he refused to move when she tried to install him in the Chaturbhuj Temple already built for him. The royal palace itself became the temple. Today MP Police salute Ram every evening at sundown with a state-protocol gun salute; on dignitary visits the courtyard becomes a royal durbar. Jahangir Mahal — the palace built with Mughal blood money

On 12 August 1602, Bir Singh Bundela (later King Bir Singh Deo of Orchha, 1605-1627) ambushed and beheaded Abu'l Fazl — author of the Akbarnama and Akbar's closest advisor — between Antri and Narwar on the Mughal road south. The assassination was contracted by Prince Salim (future Jahangir), who feared Abu'l Fazl's influence over Akbar. When Salim became emperor in 1605, he rewarded Bir Singh with the throne of Orchha (deposing the legitimate heir Ram Shah), the rank of 3000 (later raised to 5000), and Mughal funds. The Jahangir Mahal — built that same year for Jahangir's single overnight visit in 1606 — is the physical receipt for that murder. The 132 chambers, eight-bay courtyard and turquoise glaze are pure Mughal-paid Bundela hybrid. ASI ticketed (single Orchha combo).

The 'Palace of Mirrors' gets its name from the glazed blue-green tiles (not actual mirrors). Dining is under high arches and chandeliers; the menu surfaces local Bundeli dishes like murg bundelkhand and kothi-ghat fish curry that you can't find at the village stalls below.

Tip: Reserve the courtyard table — palace interior is good, the open arches with the Jahangir Mahal view at dusk is the whole point.
