Orchha in February
Madhya Pradesh, India
Go in February — 4/5 month rating, excellent light for photography, warm afternoons, and cenotaphs are best visited when quiet and cool.
Peak crowds
February is one of Orchha's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. One of the most uncrowded heritage towns in India. Even peak season is manageable.
February warms slightly to 12-26°C. The Betwa runs gentle and clear. Mustard fields around Orchha bloom yellow, framing the cenotaphs in gold. The annual Orchha Festival (if scheduled) brings classical music and dance to the palace courtyards. The vulture population at the cenotaphs—home to one of central India's largest colonies—is active.
The February story
February Orchha is warm enough for extended exploration without summer's punishment. The sunrise cycle tour (rented from the village) takes you past cenotaphs, through villages, along the Betwa, and to viewpoints that show Orchha's monuments scattered across the landscape like a forgotten kingdom—which is exactly what it is. The vulture colony at the Bundela cenotaphs is significant: Indian vultures, white-rumped vultures, and long-billed vultures roost and nest on the ancient spires. Birders come specifically for this. The Orchha Festival, when it runs, is a jewel: classical musicians performing in a palace courtyard built for exactly such performances 400 years ago. The town's Betwa Retreat resort and a handful of heritage homestays offer decent accommodation. Jhansi, 16 km away, provides the railway connection.
