Nako in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
Roads remain unreliable due to ongoing snow melt, limiting access and mobility
March begins Nako's long thaw. The lake edges soften while the center stays frozen. Temperatures: -10°C to 5°C. The road from the Hindustan-Tibet Highway becomes more reliable. Snow retreats from lower village areas. The monastery opens its doors wider as temperatures allow. Early spring light is harsh and dramatic.
The March story
March Nako is the transition nobody photographs, which is exactly why you should. The half-frozen, half-thawed lake creates surreal reflections. Meltwater streams appear through the village's ancient stone streets. The monastery's courtyard, cleared of snow, reveals carved stone work and prayer wheels that were buried for months. The villagers begin outdoor work: repairing walls, clearing irrigation channels, preparing the apricot orchards that are Nako's primary income. The road from Pooh is passable most days. The views toward the Tibetan plateau—brown, bare, and endless—are at their most expansive in March's clear air. Guesthouses are just starting to think about opening. You'll be one of the first visitors of the year.
