Nako in October
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go if you want solitude and can handle 4°C nights—the lake is gorgeous, the monastery is real, but services are vanishing fast.
October tightens toward winter at Nako. Temperatures: 0-12°C. The lake begins its seasonal colour shift as angle of light changes. Poplar trees turn gold—the only deciduous colour in this otherwise brown-and-white landscape. The road remains open but conditions deteriorate daily. Most guesthouses close by mid-October.
The October story
October Nako is the autumn farewell. Golden poplars framing a turquoise lake with snow peaks behind—the composition is almost too perfect. The village prepares for winter with focused urgency: stacking firewood, storing apricots and grain, repairing roofs. The monastery's autumn prayers have a preparatory quality. The few visitors who come are usually photographers timing the golden poplars (first two weeks of October are best). By late October, the first ice appears on the lake edges. The drive from Reckong Peo is spectacular in autumn but requires experienced mountain driving. Book your guesthouse in advance—options shrink weekly. October Nako is beautiful, brief, and demands that you show up prepared.
