Fair
McLeod Ganj in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
February is McLeod Ganj's quietest month. Tibetan New Year (Losar) celebrations—if they fall in February—add colour, but otherwise the town hibernates. Temperatures: 2-12°C. Snow is possible. The Dalai Lama may or may not be in residence. The Tibetan market has its shortest hours. But the cafes are warm, the momos are hot, and the mountains are magnificent.
The February story
Losar, if it falls in February, transforms McLeod Ganj for 2-3 days. Tibetan families dress in traditional chubas, the monastery holds special prayers, and the streets see folk dancing and communal feasting. Even without Losar, February has its merits: the Tibetan Museum (documenting the exile, the Cultural Revolution's impact on Tibet, and the refugee experience) is uncrowded and deeply moving. The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives holds meditation and philosophy courses that run regardless of season. The walk from McLeod Ganj to Dharamkot (2 km uphill) to Bhagsu Waterfall (3 km loop) is cold but the waterfall is dramatic with winter flow. Accommodation prices are at annual lows.
