Lamayuru in April
Ladakh, India
Spring snow blocks high passes; roads to Lamayuru remain impassable in early April
April brings Lamayuru properly out of hibernation. Daytime temperatures hit 8-12°C, the highway is reliably open, and the monastery grounds come alive with preparations for the season. The moonscape terrain dries out and turns its signature tawny gold. Apricot trees in the village begin to blossom—a startling splash of pink against barren rock.
The April story
This is the smart month for Lamayuru. Tourist numbers are still negligible, but infrastructure works. The monastery's main prayer hall is open for extended hours. You can explore the ruins of the old Lamayuru village, which was abandoned after a flood—crumbling stone walls against that lunar backdrop. The cave hermitages above the monastery are accessible for scrambling. Day trips to Rizong and Alchi monasteries (both under 2 hours) are comfortable. Homestays are eager for early-season guests and often more attentive. Nights still drop to -5°C, so bring layers, but days are genuinely pleasant for walking the surrounding trails.
