Kufri in May
Himachal Pradesh, India
May's peak summer influx makes pony queues stretch 1-2 hours and hotels spike in price
Peak crowds
May is one of Kufri's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Shimla's snow point. Winter weekends extremely crowded with snow tourists. Horse ride queues can be 2+ hours. Weekdays much calmer.
May is peak season — every Shimla tourist includes Kufri on their itinerary. Temperatures at 12-24°C are comfortable. The horse rides to Mahasu Peak (2-3km, Rs 500-800) fill with queues. The apple orchards are in leaf. The Nature Park is crowded. The road from Shimla is jammed on weekends. May Kufri is Shimla's overflow at maximum volume.
The May story
May Kufri is an exercise in managing crowds. Every Shimla tourist takes the 16km drive, creating traffic that can add an hour to the 45-minute journey. The horse ride queues at Kufri are 30-60 minutes on weekends. The Nature Park is packed. The upside: everything is operational and the weather is genuinely pleasant. For a better May experience: visit on a weekday morning (before 10am), skip the horse ride queues and walk to Mahasu Peak instead (3km, 45 minutes, easy), and have lunch at a dhaba before the afternoon crowd. The apple orchards are in leaf and the surrounding hills are green. Budget: day-trip Rs 1000-2000 with inflated May pricing. For Shimla visitors, Kufri is a half-day checkbox — see it, acknowledge it, and spend your remaining time on the Shimla heritage walk or the drive to Narkanda, both of which offer more value.
