Kalpa is the practical base — its guesthouses operate year-round and the Kinner Kailash view from the village is accessible without any road travel. The Sangla valley attempt depends on road conditions — call ahead. Chitkul is almost certainly inaccessible. For those who reach the inner valleys, the reward is witnessing a culture that has adapted to one of the harshest inhabited environments in India: the Kinnauri people's winter traditions of dried-fruit diet, wood-heated homes, and indoor weaving carry centuries of survival knowledge. The ancient temples (Hindu-Buddhist hybrid) maintain winter worship. Budget: Rs 500-1000. Medical: Reckong Peo district hospital, basic but functional. Carry medicine, food, and the understanding that you're entering genuinely remote territory.
