Khardung La in December
Ladakh, India
Road closed by snow; accessible only May-September
December at Khardung La is full winter. Daytime at the pass peaks at -16C, nights drop to -28C, the road under 6-10 feet of accumulated snow. Civilian access is zero through December. The Indian Army's logistics line for Siachen Glacier sustainment continues through helicopter operations and limited convoy windows when weather permits. Leh-Nubra travel does not happen. Leh itself remains accessible by air (daily flights from Delhi when weather permits — 30-40 percent winter cancellations are common). The few winter travellers in Leh focus on the Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar river (December-late February); Khardung La is not on any December itinerary. Wait for late May, when BRO completes the summer-season clearance and the LAHDC issues the next ILP cycle.
