Khardung La sits on the Leh–Nubra road at 5,359m (the official BRO signage claims 5,602m; surveys place it closer to 5,359m). Whichever measurement you accept, it is one of the highest motorable passes in the world and the logistical gateway to the Nubra and Shyok valleys. It is a checkpoint more than a destination — most travellers pause for ten minutes, take a photograph, and descend on the other side. The altitude is uncompromising: AMS strikes fit adults here with no warning.

You develop a mild headache, nausea, dizziness or loss of appetite above roughly 2,500m within 6–24 hours of arrival.

Stop ascending. Rest at the current altitude for 24–48 hours. Hydrate aggressively. If symptoms worsen or fail to improve, descend 500m and seek medical help. Never ascend further while symptomatic — HAPE and HACE kill quietly.

The first ILP check on the Leh-Nubra road. Army maintains an emergency oxygen post here — worth a stop if you're feeling altitude effects before continuing up. Small cafeteria usually has biscuits + hot water.
Wari La is 47m lower than Khardung La and considerably less crowded — when Khardung La is choked with army convoys (common 8-11am), Wari La is empty. The road via Sakti also gives access to the Indus-Shyok confluence and a different Nubra approach via Agham. Check with BRO at the Sakti gate — opens late June after Khardung La, sometimes early July.

WHERE TO EAT · 5 VERIFIED PICKS
Signature: Maggi noodles with butter tea
Run by the Indian Army at 5,359m on the pass top, named after Col. Chewang Rinchen, the Ladakhi soldier decorated for the 1948 and 1971 Nubra-sector campaigns. Holds an Asia Records / Worldkings citation as the world's highest-altitude cafeteria; the photo-stop most travellers remember from the Nubra crossing.
Tip: Stay 10-15 minutes max — eat the Maggi, drink the tea, get back in the car. Lingering above 5,300m brings on AMS for travellers who haven't acclimatised in Leh first. Cash only; no signal for UPI.
Signature: Complimentary masala chai
At the pass top (5359m), the Indian Army runs a small canteen that serves free hot tea to civilians and military traffic — a 60-year-old courtesy on what was for decades marketed as "the world's highest motorable road". The free chai is a courtesy gesture, not a commercial outlet; donations to the Sainik Welfare box are customary.
Tip: Stay no more than 20-30 minutes at the top — SpO2 drops fast at 5359m. Drink one cup, donate, descend. Open seasonally May-Oct daylight hours only.
Signature: Butter tea (gur-gur cha)
Khardung village (~3970m, ~50 households) sits 8km below the pass on the Nubra side and is the only permanently-inhabited settlement near the Khardung La crossing. Two-three home-run tea stalls serve butter tea (gur-gur cha — yak butter churned with brick tea and salt) the way it has been served on the Yarkand-Leh caravan route for centuries. This is the most authentic Khardung-area tea you will get, but you have to ask — there are no signboards.
Tip: Stop on the way DOWN from the pass when you're ready to eat; ask any local for "gur-gur cha" — they'll point you to a household. Open whenever the village is open (Apr-Oct).
Signature: Thukpa noodle soup
North Pullu (~4540m) is the first warm-food stop on the Nubra-side descent. The BRO checkpoint here governs Nubra-bound traffic from May-Oct; a small cluster of tin-shed dhabas operated by Khardung-village residents serves traffic coming from both sides. Thukpa here is heavier and oilier than Leh versions — appropriate fuel at altitude.
Tip: Eat going DOWN to Nubra, not coming UP from Leh — appetite returns once you're below 4800m. Carry cash; no signal at the checkpoint.
Signature: Hot masala chai
The South Pullu checkpoint at ~4750m is the last/first warm-food stop on the Leh-side ascent to Khardung La. Run by BRO and the small dhaba cluster that has grown around the ILP/Environment Fee checkpoint, the canteen serves the standard high-altitude Ladakh kit — chai, Maggi, thukpa, packaged biscuits — at army-canteen pricing. Critical because the road from South Pullu to the top is gravel/dirt and most travellers eat their last warm bite here before the pass.
Tip: Open 24x6 in summer (May-Oct) tied to checkpoint hours. Carry small denominations (no UPI signal). Drink chai slowly — it doubles as a 10-min acclimatisation pause.
