Kedarnath in February
Uttarakhand, India
Skip — yatra closes officially after Diwali (early Nov) and reopens May 6 (Akshay Tritiya). Helicopter and trek both shut. Off-season visits attempt the trek illegally. Better window: May–October, with monsoon caveats Jul–Aug.
February keeps Kedarnath sealed in deep winter. Snow accumulation peaks. Avalanche risk is extreme on all approach routes. The Mandakini valley is frozen. The 2013 reconstruction — temple restoration, new buildings, flood channels — sits under snow. The priests maintain worship at the winter temple in Ukhimath, where the murti resides in a small shrine. There is nothing for visitors at Kedarnath itself.
The February story
Same as January: Kedarnath is completely inaccessible. Ukhimath is your winter option. For February planning: the Char Dham yatra online registration opens months before the May temple opening. Early registration gets better helicopter booking slots and accommodation options. The trek requires: good trekking shoes (not sneakers), rain gear (even in May-June), layered warm clothing, and acclimatization (spend a night in Guptkashi at 1319m before the trek). The helicopter option eliminates the 16km walk but not the cold or altitude — you still arrive at 3583m and need to handle the thin air. Medical preparation: consult a doctor about altitude sickness, carry Diamox if prescribed, and descend if symptoms appear. The 2013 disaster infrastructure improvements mean the trek is safer than before, but Himalayan monsoon remains unpredictable.
