Kedarnath in April
Uttarakhand, India
April sees road clearing intensify. The lower approach routes open. Gaurikund (the trek starting point) becomes accessible. But Kedarnath's 16km trek remains closed â snow patches, unstable terrain, and incomplete trail clearance make it dangerous. The helicopter operators prepare but don't fly until the temple opening. Late April's anticipation is palpable in Rudraprayag and Ukhimath.
The April story
Late April sees the final preparations. If the road to Gaurikund opens early, you can drive up and scout the trek starting point. The town of Guptkashi (50km from Gaurikund) is the staging base: hotels (Rs 800-2500), restaurants, and the Vishwanath temple. Ukhimath (18km from Guptkashi) still holds the Kedarnath murti â a pre-season visit there is worthwhile. The Gaurikund to Kedarnath trek in the first days after opening is special: fresh snow on the upper reaches, wild flowers along the lower trail, and a pilgrim energy of anticipation rather than routine. However, early-season trail conditions can be challenging â snow patches on the upper 4km, unstable sections, and cold camping. Only experienced trekkers should attempt the first week. For most visitors, the second and third week of May offers the best balance of accessible trails and manageable crowds.
