Gopeshwar in December
Uttarakhand, India
Chopta's snow trekking requires winter mountaineering experience — casual visitors will find cold town access but limited activities
December locks Gopeshwar into winter mode. Temperatures range -2°C to 8°C, and Chopta sits under reliable snow cover. The Tungnath trail becomes a snow trek — beautiful but only for equipped trekkers with microspikes or crampons. The town runs on a slower clock: early sunsets, chai stalls closing by 5 PM, and the Gopinath Temple visited mainly by locals doing their morning puja. The road from Chamoli is passable but icy patches appear after Pipalkoti. If you want a quiet Himalayan winter without Manali's tourist infrastructure, this is it.
The December story
The snow trek to Tungnath is December's draw for the prepared. Knee-deep snow on the trail above 3000m, absolute silence broken only by wind and the occasional monal call, and if the sky is clear, the Himalayan wall in winter white is staggering. You need microspikes, gaiters, a 4-season sleeping bag if camping, and ideally a local guide (₹1500-2000 per day from Chopta). The temple is closed but the architecture under snow is photogenic enough to justify the climb. Gopeshwar town functions normally — the bazaar, the temple, the dhabas — but with a skeleton crew of visitors. GMVN guesthouse is your most reliable stay at ₹800-1200. The Chamoli road stays open though drive carefully after Pipalkoti where black ice forms in shadows. Don't expect mobile data above Gopeshwar — BSNL works intermittently, Jio and Airtel drop out. Carry offline maps. The trade-off for December's hardship is exclusivity: you might be the only tourist in the entire district.
