Peak Season
Dungarpur in January
Rajasthan, India
January Dungarpur is southern Rajasthan at its gentlest. At 223 metres, temperatures range 10-26°C — warm days, cool nights, and a clarity of light that makes the tribal Vagad region's architecture glow. Gaib Sagar Lake reflects the Udai Bilas Palace, and the town operates as though tourism has not been invented.
The January story
Dungarpur has what Udaipur had before the world found it: lakeside palaces, extraordinary stone architecture, and zero tourist infrastructure. The Juna Mahal (Old Palace) is a seven-storey fortified palace with every interior surface covered in murals, glass mosaics, and miniature paintings — it rivals any Rajasthan palace but sees maybe 5 visitors a day. The newer Udai Bilas Palace (now a heritage hotel, ₹5,000-15,000/night) sits on Gaib Sagar Lake with the refinement of Udaipur and none of the crowds. The Baneshwar temple's annual fair is usually in February but preparations begin now. Budget options in town: ₹500-1,500/night.
