Juna Mahal — Dungarpur's seven-storey citadel of Krishna Raslila frescoes.
Juna Mahal is only opened by prior permission — you have to ask at Udai Bilas Palace and a caretaker walks you up the hill. No tour buses, no ticket booth, no signage. As a result it's skipped by 99% of Rajasthan itineraries.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
Built in the late 13th century on a high pareva-stone platform and expanded over seven centuries into a seven-storey citadel-cum-palace, Juna Mahal is one of the most artistically intact royal residences in Rajasthan. Inside: fortified walls, watchtowers, narrow corridors designed to delay attackers, and rooms covered floor-to-ceiling in frescoes, miniature paintings, and glass and mirror inlay. Subjects include Krishna Raslila in Nathdwara style, Mahabharata scenes, Gangaur festival, and the historical Bhil-Rajput wars of Dungarpur. Limited visit hours, max ~20 people a day, escorted only. Photography rules vary.
