Daulatabad Fort
Maharashtra ยท Marathwada ยท 630m
The impregnable hilltop fortress โ moats, dark tunnels, and a 200m vertical climb
Why Special
Daulatabad (originally Devagiri) is one of India's most impressive medieval fortresses. Muhammad bin Tughlaq famously moved his entire capital from Delhi here in 1327. The fort's defenses are legendary: a rock-cut moat, a dark spiral tunnel designed to disorient invaders, false doors, hot oil channels, and a 200m near-vertical climb to the top. The Chand Minar (63m tower) is India's second-tallest after the Qutb Minar.
