Limited snow play window before roads become treacherous in late February
February thaws Dalhousie cautiously. Daytime hits 5-13°C, the last snowfall of winter lingers on north-facing slopes, and early rhododendrons prepare to bloom. The town remains quiet — school holidays have not started, summer tourists are still months away.
The February story
The Bakrota Hills walk (5 km loop) is February's highlight — elevated views of the Pir Panjal range with snow still thick on the peaks, and the path itself clear of ice by mid-month. The Subhash Baoli, a memorial to Subhash Chandra Bose who stayed here in the 1930s, sits in a pine grove that feels particularly contemplative in late winter. Tibetan market in the town centre sells winter woolens at year-end prices. The road to Chamba (50 km) is open and scenic. Hotel Grand View and similar mid-range properties charge ₹1,000-2,500/night. February is for repeat visitors who know Dalhousie has a personality beyond its summer face.
