Chitkul in April
Himachal Pradesh, India
Roads may not fully open until late April, leaving access unpredictable
April opens Chitkul to comfortable visiting. Temperatures reach 5-15°C, the road from Sangla is reliable, and the village completes its transformation from winter fortress to alpine hamlet. Snow recedes to the peaks, apple orchards show first blossoms, and the Baspa river runs strong with meltwater.
The April story
The village's terraced potato and barley fields get ploughed — often by yak or dzo, the yak-cattle hybrid that is Kinnaur's working animal. Watching traditional ploughing against a backdrop of 5,000-metre peaks is a reminder that farming here is an act of faith as much as agriculture. The famous ITBP checkpost (India-Tibet border) is active, and you can walk to the end-of-the-road sign marking the last point before no-man's-land. Homestays serve rajma-chawal, local chulli trout, and churpe (dried cheese). Rooms: ₹1,000-3,000/night. April Chitkul has the rawness of a mountain village that functions on its own terms.
