Peak Season
Bharatpur in December
Rajasthan, India
December is peak season alongside January. Cold mornings (5-8°C) produce mist over the marshes that burns off by 9am to reveal perfect birding conditions. The full complement of winter migrants is in residence. Sarus cranes are paired. Photography conditions are optimal.
The December story
December is Keoladeo at its finest alongside January. Every migratory species is in residence, the water levels have stabilised, and the cold mornings (5-8°C) create the misty conditions that make the park photographs memorable worldwide. The painted stork colony in the Keoladeo temple area is active with early nesting. Common cranes feed in fields adjacent to the park, returning at dusk in formations that cross the sunset. Sarus cranes perform their famous unison calls. The woodland section holds owls (spotted owlet, Indian scops-owl), treepies, and barbets. December weekdays are best — weekends bring day-trippers from Jaipur and Agra. The cycle-rickshaw guides are at peak demand but still available with advance booking through your hotel. December Bharatpur is not a side trip to your Golden Triangle tour — it is the reason to reroute the Golden Triangle.
