The December story
December rewards the traveller who skips Pushkar Fair season but still wants Rajasthan at its atmospheric best. The Dargah at dawn, with fog rolling through the bazaar and devotees wrapped in woollen shawls, is profoundly moving. Evening qawwali sessions feel more intimate — fewer bodies, more space to sit and absorb. Pushkar's ghats are quiet, the water still and reflective. Taragarh Fort climb is ideal in cool weather. The Ajmer-Pushkar road, through the Aravalli gap, is beautiful in clear winter light. December is also excellent for Rajasthan rail journeys — the Ajmer-Udaipur or Ajmer-Jaipur trains pass through gorgeous terrain. Pack layers; it's colder than you expect.
