Alchi in February
Ladakh, India
February keeps Alchi frozen. The Indus river nearby develops ice shelves, and the famous Chadar trek on the Zanskar river draws adventurers to the region. Alchi's monastery sits quiet and cold, its 1000-year-old murals preserved by the same dry cold that tests visitors.
The February story
February visitors to Alchi are almost always Chadar trek participants with a day to spare. If that's you, the monastery detour is essential. The murals predate anything at Hemis, Thiksey, or Lamayuru โ we're talking 11th century, when Kashmir's Buddhist artisans were among the world's finest painters. The colours โ lapis blue, vermillion, gold โ survive because of Ladakh's zero-humidity climate. The Sumtsek temple's three giant bodhisattva statues, each wearing intricately painted robes, are art-history landmarks. The village has minimal facilities in February. Bring your own food and water. The caretaker monk will open temple doors if asked. No tickets, no queues, no audio guides. Just you and a millennium of devotion.
