Alchi in December
Ladakh, India
Roads to Alchi freeze over in December, making access unreliable or impossible
December is deep winter — Alchi is accessible only from Leh (weather permitting), the village is snowbound, and temperatures drop to -20°C. The monastery murals sit in darkness and cold. This is not a visit anyone should plan unless they're living in Leh already.
The December story
There is no practical reason to visit Alchi in December unless you are a resident of the Indus valley. The monastery is closed to visitors, the village is snowbound, and the access road may be blocked. That said, the Indus valley in December — seen from the Leh-Srinagar highway — is one of Earth's most hauntingly beautiful winter landscapes: frozen streams, snow-dusted mountains, brilliant blue sky, and silence so complete it feels physical. If you find yourself in Leh in December and the road is clear, drive past Alchi just for the landscape. But enter the monastery? That's a spring or summer privilege.
