Rock Climbing in North India: Where the Walls Are

6 min read3 April 2026

# Rock Climbing in North India

India's rock climbing scene is small but growing. The Himalayas offer granite walls, sandstone boulders, and ice climbing. Here are the spots with actual developed routes.

Manali — Vashisht Boulders and Aleo Crags

The most developed climbing area in North India. Granite boulders at Vashisht (V0-V8). Sport climbing routes at Aleo Crags (5a-7b). Local climbers maintain bolted routes. Gear rental available from Manali adventure shops. Best: March-June, September-November.

Rishikesh — Shivpuri Boulders

Riverside bouldering on the Ganga. Sandstone problems from V0 to V5. The setting is spectacular — climb above the river. Not a destination for serious climbers but excellent for beginners combining with rafting.

Hampta Pass Area — Alpine Rock

Granite walls at 3,500-4,000m near Hampta Pass. Multi-pitch routes developed by Indian mountaineering clubs. Requires own gear and partner. No commercial operations.

Dhauj (Near Delhi)

The closest real climbing to Delhi — 60km south in Faridabad district. Quartzite walls with 30+ bolted routes (5a-7a). Weekend warrior territory. Bring your own gear or rent from Delhi climbing shops.

Practical Intelligence

No commercial rock climbing gyms or outdoor operators run regular programs. Climbing in India is largely self-organized through communities like Delhi Rock Climbing Club and Climbers of India. Bring your own shoes, harness, and rope.
