Logistics

Fly into Chandigarh, out of Dharamshala (Gaggal). Or circular from Chandigarh.

Day by Day

1
ChandigarhShimla· 115km

Drive to Shimla. Or take the toy train from Kalka (5hrs, book Chair Car in advance — the journey IS the attraction). Afternoon: Mall Road walk, Christ Church, Scandal Point. Shimla is faded colonial charm — don't expect glamour, expect atmosphere.

2
ShimlaTirthan Valley· 150km

Drive to Tirthan Valley via Narkanda and Aut. 5-6hrs. Check into a riverside homestay in Gushaini or Jibhi. Evening by the Tirthan river — the sound of water, the cold air, no phone signal. This is the antidote.

3
TirthanTirthan· 30km

Jalori Pass drive (3100m, the highest point on this trip). Serolsar Lake walk (2km flat forest trail). Afternoon: Chehni Kothi ancient tower hike, or trout fishing in the river (get a license from the forest dept). Or just read a book by the water.

4
TirthanManali· 130km

Drive to Manali via Aut-Kullu (3-4hrs). Check into Old Manali. Afternoon: Hadimba Temple, walk the Old Manali lanes. Find a riverside cafe. Manali is loud and touristy on Mall Road, but Old Manali still has soul.

5
ManaliManali· 60km

Solang Valley morning (paragliding in summer, snow in winter). Then through Atal Tunnel to Sissu (Lahaul side) — the landscape changes dramatically. Lunch at Sissu, see the waterfall. Return through tunnel. Evening: Vashisht hot springs, Naggar Castle if time.

6
ManaliDharamshala· 240km

The long drive to McLeod Ganj. 7-8hrs via Mandi-Jogindernagar-Palampur. It's a full day on the road but the Kangra Valley scenery is gorgeous. Arrive evening. Settle in. Tsuglagkhang Complex (Dalai Lama's temple) if open.

7
DharamshalaDharamshala· 10km

McLeod Ganj full day. Bhagsu Waterfall morning (go early, it gets crowded). Namgyal Monastery. Tibetan Museum. Walk to Dharamkot for the views and hippie cafe culture. Afternoon: Norbulingka Institute (30min drive down — Tibetan arts and crafts, beautiful gardens). Tibetan food trail: thukpa, momos, tingmo.

8
DharamshalaBir· 70km

Drive to Bir (2hrs via Palampur). Bir is India's paragliding capital — the landing site is in Bir, the launch is at Billing (14km uphill). Afternoon: paragliding tandem flight (15-25min, ₹2,500-3,500 — one of the best things you'll ever do). If not into flying, Bir has monasteries, cafes, and a great Tibetan colony.

9
BirBir· 20km

Morning: Chokling Monastery, Bir tea gardens walk. Second paragliding flight if you got hooked. Or the Billing trek (14km uphill, 4-5hrs) for fit trekkers. Afternoon: Bir Tibetan colony, shopping. This is a rest day — Bir is meant for sitting in cafes and watching paragliders land.

10
BirChandigarh· 250km

Drive back to Chandigarh (5-6hrs via Bilaspur or Una). Or if flying from Dharamshala: 2hr drive to Gaggal airport. Trip ends.
