The festival showcases diverse Indian classical dance forms including Odissi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, and Sattriya. Named after the astronomical halfway point of the sun's northward journey, honoring the sun god.

January is when Modhera aligns. Daytime 10-26C, sharp winter light on the 1026 AD Sun Temple's carved sabha mandap, the Surya Kund stepped tank at peak visibility, and the Modhera Dance Festival (Uttarardh Mahotsav) in the third week — three nights of Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi against the lit-up temple.

Lunch hours (12:30-2:30pm) are the only window worth attending — outside that, the kitchen runs leaner. Tour bus crowds can take 30-40 min for refills; if you're a small group, ask the captain to prioritise your table. Skip if you're going on to Patan for lunch instead — same quality, different distance.

Don't expect a full Gujarati thali every day — the kitchen rotates a small menu. Snacks (vada, poha, samosa) are the reliable orders. Best as a pre-temple breakfast (it opens early) or a post-temple chai stop. Most visitors do a half-day Modhera + half-day Patan; pack a thali at Patan instead of relying on Modhera for lunch.
