8 treks found
Lonavala · Maharashtra
One of Maharashtra's most accessible fort treks. Well-paved steps lead to the top of Lohagad (Iron Fort), with panoramic views of Pawna Lake and the surrounding Sahyadri hills. Connected to Visapur Fort via a saddle.
Pune · Maharashtra
Pune's most beloved trek. Sinhagad (Lion Fort) is where Tanaji Malusare scaled the cliff face with a monitor lizard to recapture it for Shivaji — "Gad aala pan Sinha gela" (the fort is won but the lion is lost). The monsoon trek from the base is stunning.
Twin forts of Shrivardhan and Manaranjan perched on the Sahyadri ridge. The trek from Lonavala via Udhewadi passes through dense forest. Monsoon transforms the trail with waterfalls and greenery.
Bhandardara · Maharashtra
Maharashtra's highest peak at 1,646m. The trek from Bari village follows a well-marked trail with iron ladders on steep rock sections. The summit has a small temple and 360-degree views of the Sahyadri range and Arthur Lake.
Shivaji's first fort — he captured Torna at age 16 in 1643, beginning the Maratha Empire. The highest fort in the Pune district at 1,404m. The trek from Velhe village is steep but rewarding with views of Rajgad and the surrounding Sahyadri.
A Sahyadri fort with a natural rock window (Nedhe — the eye of the needle) that frames the surrounding hills perfectly. The trek from Ratanwadi village passes Amruteshwar temple (12th century Hemadpanthi architecture) and climbs through forest to the fort.
Larger and less crowded than neighbouring Lohagad. Visapur Fort has ruins of old buildings, cannon placements, and a waterfall inside the fort during monsoon. Connected to Lohagad via a saddle — do both in a day for the full experience.
Igatpuri · Maharashtra
One of Maharashtra's most dramatic treks. Konkan Kada is a concave cliff face overhanging a 1,400m vertical drop — standing at the edge is one of India's most thrilling experiences. Multiple routes: Pachnai (easiest), Nalichi Vaat (rock patch), Junnar Darwaza.
