Chopta in a day — Tungnath + Chandrashila sunrise

Pre-dawn

Start Tungnath trek at 4am for Chandrashila sunrise. Chopta is the base (2680m). Tungnath temple (3680m) is 3.5km uphill, moderate trek. Chandrashila summit (4000m) is 1.5km beyond Tungnath. Total 5km each way, 4h round trip for fit hikers. Reach Chandrashila by 6am for first light on Nanda Devi, Trisul, Chaukhamba peaks — arguably the most spectacular sunrise panorama in Uttarakhand.

Morning

Tungnath temple — the highest Shiva temple in the world, one of 5 Panch Kedar temples. Morning aarti at 7:30am if timing works. Descend to Chopta by 10am.

Midday

Back at Chopta — breakfast-lunch at Chopta Meadows Resort or any trekker dhaba. Rest. The sunrise trek is genuinely tiring at altitude.

Afternoon

Deoria Tal (15km from Chopta, 30 min drive + 2km easy trek from Sari village) — the alpine lake where Yudhishthira's Yaksha dialogue is said to have occurred. Tranquil reflection of Chaukhamba mountain. 90 min visit. Return Chopta.

Evening

Chopta's few resorts + camps are quiet evenings — meadow walks until sunset + basic dinner. Bed early.

itinerary.badWeather

Chopta winter (Dec–Mar) has heavy snow — Tungnath trek becomes technical snow hike with micro-spikes required. Monsoon (Jul–Sep) brings leeches + rain. Apr–Jun + Oct–Nov are ideal seasons. Bad weather + Tungnath closed: Deoria Tal is lower + more accessible. Indoor fallback: hotels only (Chopta is essentially a meadow camp area, not a town).
