Why it mattersTosamaidan was returned to civilian use in 2014 after decades as a military range; it is now one of Kashmir's most stunning reclaimed landscapes.
May opens Tosamaidan cautiously. Snow retreats from the meadow edges. The first green shoots appear through receding white. The approach trek from Yusmarg (12km, 4-5 hours) becomes viable though snow patches remain. Temperatures at 5-15°C. The scale of the meadow starts revealing itself — this is not a small clearing but a vast grassland ringed by mountains. Wildflowers begin.
Live in Tosamaidan
Forest department rest house — the only proper accommodation near the meadow. Basic rooms, caretaker cooks meals. Book through J&K Forest Dept — it's a process but worth it for overnight meadow access.
