Why it mattersEvery year's Magh Mela is a mini-Kumbh; every 6th year it becomes Ardh Kumbh, and every 12th year the Maha Kumbh — the largest human gathering on Earth.
January in Prayagraj is Magh Mela season. Temperatures drop to 5-10°C at night, 20°C by day. Millions of pilgrims camp at the Sangam confluence where the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati meet. The city transforms — temporary pontoon bridges, tent cities, and an energy you won't find anywhere else in India. In Kumbh years (next: 2025), multiply everything by fifty.
Live in Prayagraj
Clean mid-range hotel in the Civil Lines area. AC rooms, decent wifi, walking distance to restaurants. Not fancy but reliable. The staff can arrange sangam boat trips.
Government hotel close to the sangam. Large rooms, garden. Good for Kumbh season if you book months ahead. Off-season it's peaceful and half-empty.

Their bakery counter is the locals' takeaway secret — pastries, sandwiches and cakes from the same kitchen. Sit-down is best for tandoori and sizzlers, not the pizza.

Arrive 7:30-9:30am for the first batch — hot kachori, fresh sabzi. By mid-morning the sabzi has thickened. Cash only.

Order the mutton dosa — non-obvious south-Indian item the menu carries that most cafes drop. Filter coffee is the constant; the food is incidental.

Takeaway only — there's no seating. The masoor dalmoth keeps a week and is the standard Allahabadi-snack souvenir. Cash preferred.

Ancestral home of the Nehru-Gandhi family. Museum with personal belongings, letters, and independence movement artifacts.
Mughal fort built by Akbar in 1583 at the confluence. Houses the Akshaya Vat (undying banyan tree) and Patalpuri Temple.
