CONCERNS
Sangam city — Kumbh/Ardh Kumbh years turn it unsolo-able (2025 Maha was 600M people). Off-Kumbh, Sangam + Anand Bhavan + IIIT area are daytime-safe.
Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) sits at the sacred Triveni Sangam — confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. Host to the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest human gathering (100+ million pilgrims). The Maha Kumbh occurs every 12 years. Also significant for India's independence movement — Anand Bhavan was the Nehru family home.
Conservative dress at ghats and religious sites. Cover shoulders and knees. Remove shoes at temples. During Kumbh Mela — wear simple, washable clothing (you will get wet and muddy).
Vegetarian food dominates near the Sangam. City has decent restaurants. During Kumbh Mela — stick to packaged food and sealed water bottles, avoid open-air stalls. Bottled water essential year-round.
Cards accepted at hotels and restaurants. UPI widespread. Cash needed at ghats, for boats, and during Kumbh Mela.
Moderate. University city (Allahabad University) with educated population. Good English at hotels and Civil Lines area. Low at ghats.
All carriers work well. During Kumbh Mela, networks get severely congested — download offline maps beforehand.
Delhi — approximately 600 km. Varanasi is 120 km. Lucknow is 200 km.
Standard Indian e-Visa. No special permits. During Kumbh Mela, special crowd management and security zones are in effect — follow police instructions.

Sacred confluence of Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati. Site of the world's largest gathering — Kumbh Mela.
Ancestral home of the Nehru-Gandhi family. Museum with personal belongings, letters, and independence movement artifacts.

Nehru family home. Where Congress meetings happened. Jawaharlal Nehru, Motilal Nehru, Indira Gandhi lived here. Now a museum with personal belongings and letters.

Confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati. Boat rides to the exact meeting point. Pilgrims bathe. Kumbh Mela (every 12 years) draws 100M+.
HIDDEN GEMS · 3 NEAR PRAYAGRAJ
Most pilgrims go from MP side. The UP approach is unknown.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
Where the Narmada River begins — ancient temple, hot springs, sacred geography.
An active ashram and 100+ Shiva-linga complex in the Colonelganj/George Town neighbourhood, identified in the Ramcharitmanas as the place where Sage Bhardwaj welcomed Ram, Sita and Lakshman on their way to Chitrakoot. The Bhardwajeshwar Linga at the centre is said to have been consecrated by the rishi himself. A grand statue of Maharshi Bhardwaj was installed in the adjoining park before the 2019 Kumbh. Best: October to February, mornings 6-9 AM; especially Maha Shivratri and during Kumbh/Magh Mela bathing days. Reach: Near Swaraj Bhavan, Colonelganj, George Town, Prayagraj 211002 — about 3 km from Prayagraj Junction. Auto from the station ₹80-120; from Sangam ₹150.. Tip: Free entry. Open dawn to dusk. Modest dress. The Bhardwaj Park opposite has the Maharshi statue and benches if you want a quiet hour. Combine with Anand Bhawan (1.5 km) on the same loop. Avoid Kumbh main bathing days unless you're there for the mela itself — crowds become unmanageable..
An ancient Shiva temple on the Yamuna's right bank in the Cantonment, housing a 3.5-foot black-stone Shivalinga that local tradition says Lord Ram installed for Sita on the way to Chitrakoot. The temple is mentioned by name in the Shiva Purana, Padma Purana and Skanda Purana as 'Kameshwar Tirtha'. The riverside aarti at sunset draws fewer than fifty regulars on most days — the antithesis of the Sangam crowd. Best: October to February; daily 5 AM-12 PM and 3-9 PM. Maha Shivratri and Sawan Mondays are biggest. Reach: Saraswati Ghat, near Old Cantonment area, ~3 km from Prayagraj Junction. Auto/e-rickshaw ₹80-120. Walk down the ghat steps from the Cantt road.. Tip: Free entry. No footwear inside. Photography of the courtyard is fine; not the garbhagriha. Combine with a Saraswati Ghat boat ride (₹100-300 share). Modest dress; head covered in the inner sanctum is appreciated..

WHERE TO EAT · 10 VERIFIED PICKS
Signature: tandoori chicken
Prayagraj's longest-running multi-cuisine restaurant — opened 1964 in Civil Lines and still the city's default occasion-dinner address. Tripadvisor 4.2/5 across 397 reviews; Tandoori, Continental and bakery sections under one roof.
Tip: Their bakery counter is the locals' takeaway secret — pastries, sandwiches and cakes from the same kitchen. Sit-down is best for tandoori and sizzlers, not the pizza.
Signature: Allahabadi samosa with masoor dalmoth
Founded 1890 in Loknath Galli by Mitthu Lal — the namkeen and desi-ghee snack shop Jawaharlal Nehru frequented while studying in Allahabad. Famous for the Allahabadi samosa fried in pure ghee and the masoor dalmoth that travels nationwide.
Tip: Takeaway only — there's no seating. The masoor dalmoth keeps a week and is the standard Allahabadi-snack souvenir. Cash preferred.
Signature: filter coffee with masala dosa
Allahabad branch of India's worker-owned coffee co-operative since 1957, on Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Civil Lines. Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, Firaq Gorakhpuri and Harivansh Rai Bachchan all held court here. White-uniformed waiters, Raj-era facade, prices frozen in another decade.
Tip: Order the mutton dosa — non-obvious south-Indian item the menu carries that most cafes drop. Filter coffee is the constant; the food is incidental.
Signature: makhan ka samosa with dalmoth
Narrow lane in old Allahabad's Chowk lined with the city's heritage namkeen and street-food shops — crisp mini samosas, makhan ka samosa, dalmoth, creamy lassi. Locals stroll here in the evening sampling stall by stall; the Hari Ram & Sons flagship is on this lane.
Tip: Walk the full lane from Loknath Mandir end to Chowk Bazaar — sample one item per shop rather than committing to a single counter. Cash dominates.
Signature: kachori with aloo sabzi and pumpkin
Katra Chauraha's khasta-kachori institution — pure desi-ghee fried, served with aloo sabzi and a sweet-sour pumpkin curry. Multi-generation operation, the recipe locals will tell tourists is the right place to go for the city's signature breakfast.
Tip: Arrive 7:30-9:30am for the first batch — hot kachori, fresh sabzi. By mid-morning the sabzi has thickened. Cash only.
Signature: wood-fired pizza
Modern Italian-leaning casual restaurant — Tripadvisor 4.6/5 across 184 reviews. The under-40 Prayagraj crowd's default for date-night pizza and pasta in a city short on continental options.
Tip: Wood-fired pizzas are the safe order; pasta is dependable but unspectacular. Books out on weekend evenings — call ahead.
WHERE TO SLEEP · EDITOR'S PICKS
homestay
Rakesh and Anjuli Srivastava — retired government employees — run three rooms (two classic + one family) near Arail Ghat, 5 km from Triveni Sangam. Complimentary homemade breakfast, self-cooking kitchen on the ground floor, 24-hour hot water, and a direct pickup/drop arrangement to the ghat. Certified by Homestays of India; launched 2024-25 so reviews are thin. The stay that makes April in Prayagraj feel like a private arrangement, not a hotel transaction.
comfort_hotel
108 rooms in Civil Lines on Sarojini Naidu Marg — infinity pool, spa, tea lounge, 24-hour multicuisine restaurant. Entry rates ₹5,000-6,000/night below the Welcomhotel. Recent guests rated cleanliness and staff highly (5.0 / 388 reviews on Radisson; 8.8 Expedia). Food gap vs pan-India 5-stars is real and flagged in reviews — don't expect Radisson Blu dining. But the pool + working AC + Civil Lines location is a genuine value play.
luxury_hotel
ITC's 60-room property in a colonial-heritage building — spa, rooftop bar, two restaurants. Guided spiritual trails to Triveni Sangam and Shri Bade Hanuman Ji Mandir run through the hotel concierge. TA #1 in Prayagraj; opened 2024-25 so some teething (AC inconsistency, occasional service delays) is plausible. The closest the city has to a full-service anchor.
comfort_hotel
Established Civil Lines property at 22/1 Strachey Road near Subash Chowraha and Palace Cinema — the colonial-grid heart of Allahabad/Prayagraj. 4.1/5 Goibibo across multiple booking cycles, deluxe + suite mix, on-site spa and multi-cuisine restaurant with a buffet breakfast that travellers consistently call out as the property's strongest beat. Pick this for Civil Lines walking distance to the Indian Coffee House + El Chico belt without the rooftop-pool premium.

LOCAL LEGENDS · WHO MAKES THIS PLACE
Takes you to the triveni sangam by boat and performs a proper puja at the confluence. Unlike most touts, he's upfront about his ₹300 per person charge. Been rowing since he was 14. Knows every legend about the Kumbh.
His family has been making thick malai lassi in Civil Lines for 60+ years. The earthen pot adds a flavor no steel glass can match. He'll tell you the Prayagraj food trail if you sit and chat.
