Peak Season
Vrindavan in March
Uttar Pradesh, India
March is Vrindavan's month. Holi β the festival of colours β was born here. Lathmar Holi at nearby Barsana (women beat men with sticks, men shield themselves β joyful, chaotic, ancient) starts the multi-week celebration. Vrindavan's own Holi at the Banke Bihari temple is legendary: flowers, colours, and devotional ecstasy. Temperatures at 18-30Β°C. This is one of India's most extraordinary festival experiences.
The March story
March Holi in Vrindavan is not a festival β it's a way of life that peaks for three weeks. It starts at Barsana (50km, Radha's village) with Lathmar Holi: women of Barsana chase and beat men of Nandgaon with sticks while the men try to drench them with colour. It moves to Nandgaon the next day (roles reversed). Then to Vrindavan proper, where the Banke Bihari temple Holi is possibly India's most intense colour experience: gulal (coloured powder) fills the air so thick you literally cannot see. The temple priests throw colours from the altar. The devotees are drenched, laughing, crying, singing β the line between celebration and spiritual ecstasy dissolves. Phool Wali Holi (flower Holi) at Banke Bihari, a few days before the main event, uses flowers instead of colour β a gentler introduction. Widows' Holi, organized by NGOs at the Pagal Baba temple, is one of India's most emotionally powerful events. Hotels at βΉ2,000-5,000, book 2-3 weeks ahead. Vrindavan Holi is India's single most extraordinary festival experience.
