Monsoon floods make trails impassable and roads treacherous in July
Valparai in July is the year's wettest month. Rainfall 700-1,000mm at the 1193m elevation across 27-29 wet days — the Anamalai western face catches the full SW monsoon force, among the heaviest July rainfall in South India. Daytime 18-22C, nights 16-19C with constant rain and 95 percent humidity. The 40-hairpin NH183 Aliyar-Valparai climb (60km from Pollachi base) closes 3-4 days per week under TN PWD landslide-clearance schedules; the route is one of the most landslide-prone in South India during peak monsoon. Lion-tailed macaque (LTM, IUCN endangered, ~3000 globally) troops remain at the Iyerpadi-Puthuthottam-Sholayar tea estate boundaries but Nature Conservation Foundation macaque-watching tours suspend completely. Great Hornbill juveniles flying with parents but visibility absent under cloud cover. Gaur, Sloth Bear, Leopard remain in habitat but sightings near-zero through rain. Tea estate accommodation: TANTEA ₹1,200-2,200, Parry Agro ₹2,000-3,500, Briar Tea Bungalow ₹3,500-6,000 — but most reduce capacity through the worst rain weeks. Monkey Falls at peak flow, Aliyar Reservoir at peak storage.
