Valley of Flowers in May
Uttarakhand, India
May: Ghangaria (3,048m, the base camp) begins clearing. The trail from Govindghat (13km to Ghangaria) opens. But the Valley of Flowers (3.7km beyond Ghangaria) remains snow-covered. Early-season trekkers reach Ghangaria for Hemkund Sahib access but the valley itself is not yet flowering. Patience. The blooms need June-July warmth.
The May story
The trail to Ghangaria opens. Trekkers heading for Hemkund Sahib (4,632m, the highest gurdwara in the world) start arriving. The valley itself is not yet flowering â early May visitors who expect the bloom will be disappointed. Snow patches remain. The very first wildflowers (crocuses, early primulas) appear at Ghangaria level but the valley needs another 4-6 weeks. May is the month for the Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage, not the Valley of Flowers. If you're here, combine the two: Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib (6km, 3-4 hours, steep) is a demanding but rewarding trek to a lake-side gurdwara at 4,632m. The valley will open officially in June.
