Ross Island (Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep) in June
Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India
Monsoon rains make the historic structures treacherous to explore safely
June at Ross Island is closed in everything but name. Aberdeen Jetty sailings are among the first to cancel in any sea state - the crossing is short but completely exposed. Operators run perhaps two days in the week, often cancelling within an hour of departure. Rainfall hits 400-450mm. The light-and-sound show suspends for the entire monsoon season - the lighting rigs and audio cabling cannot stay in service through rain. The roofless ruins offer no shelter on the rare day a boat reaches the island; ticketed visitors bunch at the small museum block waiting for the return sailing. The deer move into dense canopy. Wait for October.
