Prayagraj in May
Uttar Pradesh, India
Peak summer heat (38-46°C) makes outdoor exploration physically dangerous
May is brutal. 38-45°C, hot loo winds, dusty. The rivers thin. Only the most determined pilgrims take the Sangam dip. The city essentially pauses from noon to 4pm. Unless you have specific religious obligations, this is a skip month. Carry ORS packets and stay hydrated.
The May story
There is almost no tourist reason to visit Prayagraj in May. The heat is genuinely dangerous — heatstroke cases spike across UP plains cities. The rivers look tired. The city survives on mangoes, sugarcane juice, and air conditioning. If you're passing through by train, the station's waiting rooms are air-conditioned. The only upside: hotel rooms bottom out at ₹500-800 and you can negotiate anything. Civil Lines restaurants keep their AC maxed. This is when Prayagraj lives indoors.
