Peak crowds
April is one of Ponmudi's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Weekend getaway peak in winter (Dec–Feb) and summer (Apr–May) from Kottayam/Trivandrum; monsoon Jun–Sep brings mist but fewest visitors.
April in Ponmudi is when the hill station works as plains-heat relief. Daytime 16-27C, nights 14C — the 1,100m elevation holds 8-12C cooler than Trivandrum (60km below) and 6-10C cooler than the Kerala coast. The 22-hairpin road from Trivandrum is the working transit window 6-10am and 4-7pm; mid-day transits in the plains-heat-trapped lower hairpins past noon are uncomfortable. Golden Peak Resort (KTDC, 2023 expansion, ₹3,000-4,500) walk-in. Mid-tier accommodation (Ponmudi Hills Estate Resort, Hilltop Resort) at ₹1.2-2.5k. Vishu (April 14, Malayalam new year) is observed across Kerala with the kanikkonna-flower Vishukani household ritual; hill resorts stage Vishu Sadhya thalis at ₹500-1000 per banana-leaf plate. Butterfly count drops slightly versus February-March but the Indian Sunbeam, Common Crow Butterfly, and Tailed Jay all hold peak April visibility. Sunrise viewpoint at upper Ponmudi (1.5km walk) at 6-6:45am. KSRTC bus from Trivandrum 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm — 4 daily, ₹80-120. Trivandrum International (TRV) 70km. Strong call for plains-heat-fleeing south Kerala residents.
