Mumbai in December
Maharashtra, India
Go December — Mumbai at its social peak but book hotels and restaurants 3-4 weeks ahead.
Peak crowds
December is one of Mumbai's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Ganesh Chaturthi (Aug/Sep) is spectacular but extremely crowded. Monsoon brings flooding — beautiful but disruptive.
December is when Mumbai hits its social peak. Temperatures drop to 16-30°C with cool evenings finally requiring a light shawl on Marine Drive, the Arabian Sea calm, harbour ferries running daily, and the city's year-end events stack — NCPA programming, gallery openings ahead of January Mumbai Gallery Weekend, Bandra Christmas with Mount Mary Basilica midnight mass, New Year's Eve along Marine Drive and Bandra Bandstand. Hotels hit their highest rates of the year between Dec 22 and Jan 2 — Taj, Trident, Oberoi go 50% over May, restaurant reservations need 2-3 weeks notice.
The December story
December rewards travellers willing to book 4 weeks ahead. Morning Elephanta ferry (9:30am, ₹150-200 RT + ₹40 entry) sees light crowds on weekdays — the Trimurti at 11am in winter light is the year's best photography. Heritage Fort circuit walking 7am-11am at 18°C dry. Bandra Christmas: Mount Mary Basilica midnight mass Dec 24-25, Hill Road carol singers from Dec 20. New Year's Eve: Marine Drive crowd-watching from 8pm (no alcohol on the road), or rooftop dinners at Aer Four Seasons, Asilo Palladium, or Bayview Trident. AQI usually 130-200 — December's downside, mostly from inversion + Diwali residue. Side-trips: Alibaug ferry, Matheran toy train (running), Lonavala-Khandala dry but accessible. Reserve everything — flights, hotels, restaurants, ferry slots — well ahead. Crowded, premium, but Mumbai at its most alive.
