Mukteshwar in January
Uttarakhand, India
January snow closure risk may cut short your orchard wandering
January Mukteshwar is a frost-covered cliff edge with views that steal your breath—literally, at 2286m in cold air. Temperatures: -2°C to 8°C. The Kumaon orchards below are bare. The famous cliff face, used for rappelling and rock climbing in season, gleams with ice. Snow caps Nanda Devi and the entire Himalayan chain in sharp white against blue sky.
The January story
Winter Mukteshwar is for the view purist. The 350 km Himalayan panorama—from Nanda Devi (7816m) to Trishul to Panchachuli—is at its clearest in January's cold, dry air. The Mukteshwar Temple, a Shiva shrine at the cliff's edge dating to the 350 AD Kumaon dynasty, sits dramatically above a 1000-foot drop. Below the temple, the chauli ki jali (a natural rock formation with holes you can crawl through) overhangs the valley—do this only if you trust your nerves. The former IVRI (Indian Veterinary Research Institute) campus, established by the British in 1893, has colonial bungalows in a pine forest setting that functions as an unofficial heritage walk. Hotels with room heaters are essential. The nearest town, Bhowali (25 km), handles supplies.
