Chauli Ki Jali Cliff.
Mukteshwar's main draws are the temple and PCRI institute; Chauli is a 5-min walk past the temple but most visitors stop at the gate and turn back.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
A natural rock outcrop 250m behind the Mukteshwar Mahadev temple — 'chauli' means rock, 'jali' means hole, and the cliff face has natural perforations local tradition reads as marks left during a battle between a goddess and a demon. The drop is sheer ~1,000m to the valley below; the IMA and local outfits use it for rock climbing and rappelling courses. The 360-degree Kumaon line from the cliff edge is the same one that put Mukteshwar on the colonial map. Best: Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov. Avoid Jul-Aug (slippery rock, no views). Winter clear days are spectacular; sunset is the sharper light.. Reach: Walk 250m past the Mukteshwar temple — there's a marked stone path. Free entry. About 5 mins on foot from the temple gate.. Tip: Sturdy shoes — the rock is polished smooth. No railings at the edge; keep children on hand. Rappelling/climbing operators run from the temple gate (~Rs 500-1500 per session). Avoid in heavy wind..
