Continue past the tourist endpoint on a rocky ridge trail with views into Gujarat on one side and Rajasthan on the other. Nobody goes past the temple.
A man-made reservoir 5 km from Mount Abu town, built in 1897 by British engineer Colonel G.H. Trevor for crocodile breeding. The tank still functions as an active mugger crocodile sanctuary. Stone-built viewing huts ring the shore for spotting crocodiles basking on the rocks plus peafowl, sloth bear, sambar and the occasional black panther in the surrounding forest. Best: October to March, mornings 7-10 AM and afternoons 4-6 PM when crocodiles bask. Reach: 5 km from Mount Abu town via the Oriya road. Taxi ₹300-500 round trip with wait, or rent a 2-wheeler in town. Last 500 m is a forest path — park at the gate.. Tip: Entry ₹50-100 per head; open 9 AM-5 PM. Carry binoculars. Stay on marked paths — the embankment is not fenced and crocodiles can move out of the water. Combine with Achalgarh Fort (6 km further) for a half-day. Avoid monsoon when the trail is leech-prone..
An 11 km drive north of Mount Abu town to the 9th-century Achaleshwar Mahadev temple — a Paramara-dynasty Shiva shrine where the toe of the deity is worshipped instead of a linga. A four-tonne five-metal Nandi statue stands at the entrance. The fort wall above was rebuilt in 1452 by Maharana Kumbha as one of his 32 forts, with the Hanumanpol and Champapol gates still intact. Inside the compound: the 15th-century Kantinath Jain temple and the Mandakini Kund tank ringed by buffalo-sculptures and a Rajput-king image. Best: October to March; mornings 6-10 AM for puja and clear visibility on the Mandakini Kund. Reach: 11 km north of Mount Abu via the Achalgarh road. Taxi ₹500-800 round trip with 2-hour wait, or self-drive. The temple is at the road end; the fort gates are a 5-minute climb above.. Tip: Free entry to temple and fort. Footwear off in temple. This was a Maharaja's summer retreat; the heritage artwork and colonial-era ambiance are the point of being in Mount Abu at all.

Real experiences by traveler type — not generic star ratings
Nakki Lake at sunset with the hills reflecting in the water — a gentle, romantic evening. The Dilwara Jain Temples are the real attraction — the marble carving is more intricate than the Taj. We did the sunset point together — touristy but the view delivers. Mount Abu has an old-world Rajasthan hill station charm.
💡 Tip: Visit Dilwara Temples between 12-6pm when they open for tourists. The marble work inside is worth the trip alone.
Nakki Lake boating kept the kids happy. The Wildlife Sanctuary has a gentle trek where we spotted crocodiles which thrilled the kids. Dilwara Temples — explain to kids that the marble carving took centuries. The Toad Rock viewpoint is an easy walk and the rock really does look like a toad.
💡 Tip: The Trevor's Tank area in the wildlife sanctuary is the best spot for sloth bear sightings. Go at dawn with a guide.
Mount Abu is gentle and manageable — rare for a hill station. Nakki Lake is flat walking. The Dilwara Temples are on level ground with no steep stairs. The climate is mild year-round. The main market has seating and cafes. It is not dramatic like Shimla but it is comfortable and beautiful.
💡 Tip: Stay near Nakki Lake. Everything is walking distance and the evening breeze by the lake is lovely.
Mount Abu is more of a Gujarati family holiday spot than a backpacker destination. It is pleasant but not thrilling. The Dilwara Temples alone justify a stop — genuinely world-class art. One night is enough. The bus connections to Udaipur (4 hours) and Jodhpur (5 hours) are frequent and cheap.
💡 Tip: The Guru Shikhar trek — highest point of the Aravallis at 1722m — is a short 1km walk from the road. Free and the view is panoramic.
