Matheran in May
Maharashtra, India
Skip — May Matheran is the off-season worst; Mahabaleshwar at 1372m is the cooler hill-station alternative.
May Matheran at 803m is pre-monsoon humid-hot lock — 25-37°C, humidity climbing into the 70%+ range as the southwest monsoon builds in the Arabian Sea, and the laterite paths between viewpoints stay uncomfortable from dawn to dusk. Charlotte Lake (1956 reservoir) levels drop to year-low. The Sahyadri visibility collapses under Deccan dust haze, reducing Panorama and Louisa Point views to under 20km. Toy-train cabins overheat by mid-morning. The walking-based 38-viewpoint product Matheran is built on becomes essentially unusable.
The May story
Genuinely skip-it month. Even sunrise windows narrow as humidity makes 5am air uncomfortable to walk in. Heritage-stay verandahs at Lord's Central Hotel (1855) and Verandah In The Forest are passable for reading-and-rest but the journey to reach them — 21km toy-train or 3km walk from Dasturi parking — is not worth the destination experience. Real alternatives: Mahabaleshwar (1372m, 130km, 8-10°C cooler, strawberry season), Lonavala-Khandala (both 625m but waiting for monsoon), Bhandardara (750m, firefly season late May into June). The only justifiable May Matheran trip is a dedicated 1-day toy-train heritage ride from Neral and back, not a stay.
