Kurukshetra in July
Haryana, India
Monsoon flooding transforms sacred sites into waterlogged grounds with intense humidity and mosquito swarms
The monsoon arrives and Brahma Sarovar overflows its banks — water levels rising past the ghats into areas normally dry. Mosquitoes breed in standing water around heritage sites, and the flat Haryana terrain means waterlogging persists for days after each downpour. The mythology is still there; the access is not.
The July story
Flooding and mosquitoes make most heritage sites unpleasant or inaccessible. The monsoon that greens the landscape also drowns the visitor experience.
