Kokernag in July
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Waterlogged trails make the spring gardens inaccessible during peak monsoon season
July brings Kashmir's soft monsoon — 80-120mm, nothing like the mainland deluge. The gardens gleam. The spring continues its eternal flow. The surrounding Pir Panjal foothills are emerald. Temperatures at 18-32°C are warm. Amarnath Yatra season means nearby roads are busy but Kokernag itself, off the pilgrim route, stays quiet. The trout hatchery is at peak production.
The July story
July's gentle monsoon keeps Kokernag green without the violence that monsoon brings to the Indian plains. The spring gardens in light rain — every flower glistening, the spring pools pattered with drops — are beautiful. The trout hatchery is at peak production and the fresh trout at the on-site restaurant is at its best. The Pir Panjal foothills are emerald. Amarnath Yatra traffic means the Anantnag-Srinagar road is busy, but Kokernag, off the pilgrim route, is undisturbed. For Yatra pilgrims taking a day off (the base camp waits are long), Kokernag is a restorative detour. The springs circuit in July: Achabal gardens drip with monsoon beauty, Verinag's spring pool reflects grey sky and green trees, and the Martand Sun Temple in rain has a desolate grandeur. Budget: Rs 800-2000. July Kokernag is Kashmir at its most unselfconscious — nobody is performing for tourists because nobody expects tourists.
